Making the Grade

A lot of student organizations work to make their lives and schools more sustainable. But how well are these schools doing? One website offers up the answer. Greenreportcard.org is a site that gives a report card grade to participating schools on different areas of sustainability efforts such as green buildings, food and recycling, climate change and energy and more.

The grade is determined by surveys given to both the participating school’s administration and the students. The site has graded 7 schools in Georgia so far (Agnes Scott College, Berry College, Emory University, UGA, Georgia Tech, Mercer University, and Spelman College). According to the survey results, which were obtained in 2010, three schools tied for performing the best within the state. Berry College, Emory, and Georgia Tech all received a B overall.

The site grades on 9 categories and you can click through to see explanations of the grade and even the complete survey results. I found it very interesting to read about how my own school performed and it made me aware of the many improvements that still need to be made on campus. There’s even a tab that offers ways that everyone within the school can get involved to make these changes.

So check out the site and see how your own school did. Don’t see your school on the list? Get the word out and apply online to see if your school makes the grade!
