UGA Devotes A Whole Week to Earth Day

Earth Day is THIS Thursday, so get excited and get ready to devote your day to the environment.   Students involved in Go Green Alliance at the University of Georgia(UGA) decided to take Earth Day a step further and plan an entire Earth Week.  Go Green Alliance (GGA) is a group at UGA that organizes all other environmental groups at the university.   GGA organized various events throughout the week, here is a list of things upcoming for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from GGA’s website:

Wednesday (4/21): Water and Biodiversity (John Muir Day)

  • UGA’s Campus Sustainability Tours
    • Learn how UGA incorporates sustainability on campus through a walking tour of North, South, or East campus
    • Time: Guided tours leave at 3:00pm from Tate’s West lawn, followed by reception at 4:30 pm on Tate II’s green roof
    • Meeting place: Tate west lawn (Sanford Drive, UGA)
  • Screening of LIFE (Planet Earth sequel)
    • Explore the survival instincts of plants and animals in this sequel to the Planet Earth series,
    • Time: 6:00-7:30
    • Place: Miller Learning Center 171 (on Lumpkin St., UGA)

Thursday (4/22): EARTH DAY

  • UGA’s environmental groups share their eco-friendly knowledge
    • Festivities include: food, music, give-aways (recycling bins, seed starters, reusable bags)
    • Time: 10:00am-3:00pm
    • Place: Tate Plaza (Sanford Drive, UGA)

Friday (4/23): Alternative Transportation and Green Building

  • Kick off Twilight with a CAR-FREE day: ride a bike, take the bus, walk, or carpool to work or class
    • Time: 8:00am-11:00am
    • Check-points
      • Milledge Ave/Oakland Ave. (7:10-9:00am)
      • International Drive/College Station Rd. (7:15-8:00am)
      • Memorial Hall (7:30-11:00am)
      • Checkpoints include refreshments and prizes at each statio
  • Mass Bike Ride
    • Come with your bike and flamboyant costume to ride through campus promoting alternative transportation
    • Times: 11:00am, 1:10pm (during class changes)
    • Meeting place: across from Stegman on the corner of Carlton St.

If you are in Athens come out, have fun, give back to our earth, and support a great UGA organization .  If you are reading from anywhere else around Georgia, check out what your school has planned for Earth Day or take action on your own and do something for the environment (try one of the tips we mentioned earlier!).
